Race #7 Newport speedway 11-2-2024

The CVR club lined up by blind draw at the re-opening of the high banked Newport short track brought back by Chuck Ward with lots of help from workers that are making it a showplace in the Tennessee mountains. The 25 lap CVR race was second on the 9 race Saturday evening that started at 3 pm following a on-track fan fest. The draw for position placed points leader Jesse Martin on the pole with newcomer Thomas Reid on his outside. The race seemed fast with Jesse Martin and Marty Reid jumping out to lead from the green with Duffie Sams gaining on them for 3rd. On lap 12, Duffie Sams's Shoebox Ford takes a quick spin off the backstraight and ends up in the 3rd turn inside wall with both right corners damaged, unable to move. The red came out to get Duffie's Ford back to the hauler regulating him to finish last. The restart found Hank Massaro taking 3rd place behind Reid and Martin. After the retart, Jesse's Camaro began showing a bit of smoke, leading officials to throw the black flag

                            Starting order

1st row  Jesse Martin        Thomas Reid

2nd       Carlton Waugh      Terry Haney

3rd        Marty Reid              Doug Howell

4th        Hank Massaro        Duffie Sams

5th        Howard Scruggs

at the season-long points leader. With Jesse's Camaro in the pits, Reid had a much easier last 2 laps to win his 2nd race of the season. Hank Massaro's '57 Belair  was too far back to threaten Reid but finished 2nd on the night. Terry Haney's '55 Belair had a slipping clutch the last few laps of the 25 lap feature which made him look like he was backing up after a strong early run.

With Carlton Waugh's start, he locked up 3rd place in V8 points for the season. Thomas Reid got the hang of his sister's Duster and made a fun strong run in midpack with Doug Howell and Carlton Waugh.  Duffie Sams and Howard Scruggs had to start in the rear due to their earlier wins. Inline 6 driver, Howard Scruggs had to settle for second on the night to Newcomer Thomas Reid's win, but extended his points lead and perfect attendance.   Our club of racers want to thank all the officials and tracks for another great season of vintage racing and can't wait for 2025.

Race #6 Anderson motor speedway 9-7-2024

The 25 lap CVR race was first to race on the cooler Saturday evening. The draw for position placed Duffie Sams on the pole. The race went green to checkers with Duffie Sams leading from the start, and holding off 2nd placer, Marty Reid and Jesse Martin. Terry Haney's '55 Belair had shifting issues right after the Meet and Greet and had to head back to the pits early to the help of his pit crew. His purple #83 had some very fast practice laps earlier in the day. Outside pole sitter, Carlton Waugh had his '57 Belair running good to hold off the Chevelle of Doug Howell. With the 2-3 finish of Reid and Martin, leaves Martin with a single point lead for the V8 points lead with 3 more scheduled races. Inline six driver, Howard Scruggs keeps extending his 2024 points lead. Two new races are announced at Newport Speedway and the only visit to Hickory this year is coming up. Come by and say hello, and support your local short tracks.

Race #5 Anderson motor speedway 8-17-2024

The club lined up by our normal draw for position for the first event of the night. The race went green to checkers with Keith Norville leading from the start, with a battle from Marty Reid leading momentarily after he and Jesse Martin got past Scruggs, Howell and Sams. Terry Haney had the new to asphalt car blues and had to pull in early. Norville got back around Reid for his first club V8 win. 3rd place finisher, Jesse Martin still maintains the points lead in the V8 class. After the 2nd race of the night, the track had to go on hold while the rain drops and lightening went around, to resume competition. Two of Scruggs inline 6 competitors were absent due to surgeries and healing. Get well soon Kristi Peacock and Jerry DeHart. No new races are expected this month, but should have a decision in a week for September adds. Stay tuned.

Race #4 Anderson motor speedway 6-22-2024

It was a 90 some degree day at Anderson Motor Speedway on this Sat. evening, and that proved to make the track extra loose among all divisions running. The schedule called for our vintage cars to race first and the sun just laid in the windshields of the competitors as they ran in turn 3 for the twenty-five lap feature. Two new cars joined the lineup, with Keith Norville in his newly finished Chevy 2, and John Cordell in a beautiful blue '56 Ford 2 door sedan. Howard Scruggs and Doug Howell started at the rear due to their last wins at LPMP earlier in the month. The V8 cars took off and stayed close together til just past halfway Marty Reid spun his Falcon in that sunny turn 3 but with the quick action of the caution lights, everybody got through without contact. Cordell's Ford had to park it early with a vacuum leak, and Carlton Waugh's 57 Chevy dropped a belt and parked it. Norville's Chevy led on the restart, but Reid quickly picked off his other V8 competitors to win his first even

Race #3 Lonesome Pine Motorsport park 6-1-24

Humidity was low and temps not bad in the hills of Coeburn, Va's Lonesome Pine Motorsport Park Sat. evening. Each Vintage driver took their turn during practice sessions with Carlton Waugh loosing a fan belt and leaking brake fluid, needing repair. At the draw for postion, Inline 6 driver, Howard Scruggs pulled the pole and Carlton Waugh outside front row. V8 drivers Doug Howell and Marty Reid pulled the second row. Kristi Peacock and Jesse Martin had the back row, since they had the last wins. The vintage cars were the first to race with street stocks, local 4 cylinders, Southeast Limited Late Models and SuperTrucks on the schedule. Scruggs held the lead from the start for the first 2 laps then Waugh took the point. Waugh held the lead by himself for a couple laps while the V8 cars made it around the Inline 6 of Scruggs. Howell on the inside, managed to run down Waugh on the high side, with them running side by side for several laps, til Waugh faded due to the same thrown fan belt.

Further back Jesse Martin got around Marty Reid for 2nd and 3rd.  Inline 6 drivers, Howard barely stayed ahead of Peacock while the V8 cars lapped them.  Eventually Waugh's engine overheated and had to park it, while Peacock had to call it short for a lack of brakes. With laps running down, Howell managed to stay out front with a mirror full of Martin and Reid. It has been years since Howell's #28 has made a stop in victory lane. As soon as Howell's car came to a stop, the brake rotor air deflector caught fire. The quick acting fire crew  extinguished the flames so Gerald Harris could interview the winners. Howard Scruggs took home the Inline 6 trophy and maintains the points lead.  With Martin's 2nd place finish he maintains his V8 points lead over Reid. A shout out to Jerry DeHart for helping stop the leaking brakes on Carlton Waugh's Belair for the feature.

Come out to the next race June 22nd at Anderson Motor Speedway.

Race #2 Lonesome Pine Motorsport park 4-27-24

Coeburn, Virginia's Lonesome Pine Motorsport Park's oval was the 2nd race of '24 and the cool weather was a delight for our vintage cars and drivers. During 1st practice Duffie Sams's Sedan had a power wire come loose and short out. Duffie started the main event but the problem escalated him to loose power after the 2nd lap and he came to a stop on the back-straight for a end to his run. Marty Reid set the early lead after passing Carlton Waugh that started on the pole. After the restart, Danny Toney set the pace with Jesse Martin and Marty Reid right together. By halfway, Jesse dove low and got around both competiors. Further back, Kristi Peacock redeemed herself with a good run in her Inline 6 powered Duster when she had a DNS at Anderson two weeks ago. Carlton Waugh in his V8 split between Peacock and Anderson Inline 6 winner Howard Scruggs. Jesse Martin pulled away and left the close battle for second between Toney and Reid. The CVR cars are to return to Lonesome Pine June 1st.

Race #1 Anderson motor speedway 4-13-2024

Anderson Motor Speedway was the paved oval for the first race of '24 and the weather was ideal for twenty-five laps of full green flag laps of our vintage cars and drivers. Jesse Martin started his Camaro from the front row along side new comer, Steve Bush in his Plymouth. The fast Falcon of Marty Reid drew the back row so watch out for him to come thru the field, of which he did. By midway the Chevelles of Danny Toney and Doug Howell traded positions for 3rd and 4th, with Marty Reid running down Jesse Martin for a battle for the lead. Further back, Howell, Duffie Sams, and Carlton Waugh could not make any strides to get around each other. So with fingers taped up with gauze and black duct tape because of a accidental touch with his electric fan after practice, it was Jesse Martin with his first win of the new year right in front of Marty Reid. Kristi Peacock could not start her inline six engine because of a diagnosed cam gear failure after first practice.
